1887 - Underwood School District Begins

Underwood School District was the 5th organized in Otter Tail County. Underwood was included in the organized District 550 and children attended school in a little log building located on a knoll on the Knud Pederson farm, where the Turtle Lake Post Office was in the early days. Each farmer brought logs and handy men of the district built the first building 16x24 feet. Furniture consisted of a small table for the teacher and benches along the side for the students. Miss Augusta Hankey got a permit to teach and the first three months of school were held.

1892 - A New School Building

In 1892 the original log school building was sold and a new frame building was deeded to the district by the Fergus Falls National Bank on March 22, 1892. The contract for building this school was given to Halvor Back who hired E.S. Evenson, Peder Renfjord, Gustav Gunderson and a Mr. Dahlgren to build it. Among the first teachers at this school were Miss Nellie Wilson and Mrs. Hanson. Dinah Pederson taught in 1894 and Sophus Jorgens was a teacher in 1898.
