1900-1976 Additions to the School

In 1900 the roof was raised and an upper story was added, giving a two room school with four grades on the lower floor. This building was built on the site purchased from Ole Silvertson in 1919. The first class to graduate from a four year high school course was the class of 1933, with Errol Matheson as Superintendent. A gym with classrooms above was added in 1938, and in 1956 a Home Economics and Industrial Arts departments were housed in a new modern facility. In 1967, another addition was added including a new gym, 6 classrooms, shower and locker rooms, toilets and a music room. Later, a garage was built to house the buses.

1936 - Underwood's First School Bus

Clarence Salomonsen was the first bus driver. He drove for only one year as he then became the manager of a lumberyard. The first route was north, to the present Riverfront area, to Maine store, north east on the dent road to the Jim Burns store. The picture was taken in the winter between to Beckman and Larsen farms. It was single lane traffic through the entire cut which had been cleared by Doc Leitch's snow removal equipment. Notice the high banks on both sides. Half way through the bus met George Leitch with his 2 horses and a cutter he was using to deliver his mail route. They had to unhitch the horses and lead them up on the bank and lift the cutter with the mail so the bus could get by.
